DOHA: A consortium including Spanish construction firm OHL has won a contract worth about ¤1.1bn ($1.4bn) to build two metro stations here, the company said in a statement posted on its website yesterday.
The consortium, which also includes Samsung C&T and Qatar Building Company, will be responsible for designing and building two of the most emblematic stations of the metro, Msheireb and Education City.
The Education City station will connect with the proposed GCC rail network and receive students from across the region coming to Qatar's higher education hub.
Spanish construction firms are increasingly bidding for contracts abroad as government austerity measures and the collapse of a property boom in Spain in 2008 has led to a shortage of work in their domestic market.
Spanish companies are taking part in the construction of a viaduct in Kuwait and are part of the consortium that is building a high-speed rail link between Makkah and Madinah in Saudi Arabia.
At least 30 Spanish companies, including OHL, are present in Qatar, most of them from the construction sector.
