Al Wasl Hospital doctors have conducted a pioneering surgical procedure to save an 86-year-old woman suffering from cancer of the womb.
The operation was the first of its kind in the UAE because medics used a special surgical instrument to aid the removal of the patient's reproductive organs.
Dr Alyaa Al Mansoori, a gynaecologist who supervised the hysterectomy, said the one hour procedure was a success.
"It appeared that there was cancer in its first stages. That required a one-hour operation using the speculum. In the operation, the womb, ovaries, fallopian tube and lymph glands were eradicated." said Dr Al Mansoori.
"The patient remained under close medical supervision for 12 hours. She was then transferred to the gynaecology ward to complete her treatment.
"She currently enjoys good health, and can walk alone. She is due to leave the hospital within days." The patient's cancer was discovered after she was admitted to hospital with internal bleeding.
