Abu Dhabi

The UAE’s experience and prestige as a pioneer in conventional and renewable energy gives the nation confidence to stake claim to host World Energy Congress (WRC) in 2019 in Abu Dhabi, a senior official said at Abu Dhabi Ascent on Sunday.

If the UAE’s bid succeeds, it will be the first OPEC (Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries) member state to host the event in WRC’s 90 years history, Dr Mattar Hamed Al Neyadi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Energy, said at a press conference on the side-lines of the global summit.

The UAE is considered the only country exporting hydrocarbon resources while contributing to the promotion and development of investments in renewable energy markets locally and globally, he said.

The UAE is looking forward to supporting participants and members of WRC to seize investment opportunities in the market and create a platform for exchange of information and expertise in various energy fields, he said.

The Congress is a platform for discussing energy challenges , which brings together the largest elite group of experts, decision-makers and key players in the global energy sector. Voting for the hosting country is due to take place in Colombia in October 2014.

The official also said that the UAE Ministry of Energy has started preparations to issue the ‘State of Energy Report in the UAE 2015’ in collaboration with the Dubai Carbon Centre of Excellence (DCCE) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). The preparation of this report comes in line with the UAE’s energy strategy that highlights the best practices in developing the energy sector, contribution of renewable energy in the UAE’s energy diversification policy, energy efficiency criteria. The strategy underlines the consolidation of efforts to achieve clean, safe and sustainable energy as the main basis of promoting economic and social growth, and development.
