Tunisia - The construction of the first cement plant in Bir Thlathin, southern Tataouine, will begin in March 2019.

This project will be carried out by French group United cement investor.

The cost of the project amounts to 942 million dinars with a Tunisian capital of 283 million dinars.

It will create 419 direct jobs and 600 indirect jobs.

According to a presentation made at a meeting between the local governor and a delegation of investors from the group on Tuesday, the cement plant will offer a high quality product using non-polluting advanced technology.

It will be equipped with a system that will save water extracted from salted groundwater at a rate of 11 litres per tonne.

The electricity needs will be provided through the optimisation of the thermal energy of the kiln of the cement plant.

A district composed of various commodities will be installed near the cement plant for the benefit of the employees.

They will also benefit from training sessions in line with their scientific and technical skills.

Governor of Tataouine Adel Ouerghi highlighted the positive effects of the project on the region, recalling that land issues had blocked its launch.

Director General of the group Mohamed Mestikou said works will be started in March 2019, underlining that the land situation of 65% of the acquired land has been settled.

This project will be ready by 2022 with a production capacity of 1.2 million tonnes of clinker and 1.5 million tonnes of cement.
