SYSTRA France & international has finalized a study of a light subway project line that will link Ennasr to Bourjel areas of the Tunisian capital, at an estimated cost of USD 130 million, an official source told Zawya.

"The project implementation will start at the beginning of 2015 and end by December 2017. An amount of USD 76 million will be allocated for the project's infrastructure, as well as USD 54 million for equipment and purchase of 17 carriages," said Nidhal Battini, information counselor at the Tunisian ministry of transport.

"This project aims to connect the areas around the passageway X2 (El-Menzah 1, El-Menzah 4, El-Menzah 6, El-Menzah 7 and Ennasr city) to Bourjel," he added.

Battini said that the ministry plans to develop public transportation in Tunisia, with a two-stage plan that aims to increase mass transportation by 40% in the first stage, and by 50% in the second, given that the current share of mass transport is 35%.

According to Battini, the metro is divided into three different parts; the first part is 3.8 km long, linking Ennasr city with Ariana, the second part is between the Central Pharmacy station and El Khadra city, which remains unchanged for 0.8 km, and the third part is 1.1-km long, linking the metro line on the banks of the lake, with El Khadra city station along the road X2, and passes through Khair Eddin Bacha street and finally ends up at the exchange point in Bourjel.
