MUSCAT -- The Sultanate will officially be declared a member state of the World Confederation for Physical Therapy (WCPT) at the forthcoming annual general meeting congregation that will be held from June 18-23 in Amsterdam.
The Sultanate, represented by officials of the Oman Physiotherapy Association (OPA) -- a voluntary and professional physiotherapy organisation for physiotherapists, will officially be recognised as the 102nd member state under the WCPT charter, Salim bin Khalaf al Harthy, Head of OPA, told the Observer.
"This recognition is considered a milestone and a great achievement for professional physiotherapists in the Sultanate to actively participate at such an international organisation in keeping abreast with the latest advancements in the field to improve the quality of health services all over the world.
"This acknowledgement is also a significant stride for physiotherapists in the Sultanate to share skills, initiate interactions and to collaborate on issues like regulation and positive practice environments for the benefit of the people in the Sultanate".
The WCPT is the sole international voice for physical therapy and on behalf of its members, the organisation undertakes a range of projects and supports international campaigns to promote the profession of physical therapy and its contribution to global health.
The WCPT, which currently boasts of 101 member organisations and with a strength of more than 300,000 representatives of professional physical therapists worldwide also encourages high standards of physical therapy research, education and practice. The WCPT also provides its member states with exclusive access to a wide range of benefits, remarked Al Harthy.
However, to meet the criteria of the WCPT, the OPA had to amend its initial constitution and changed its name from Oman Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Association (OPRA), said the official.
"Considering the fact that the modern medical care depends increasingly on evidence-based care, the OPA recognised this and tirelessly sought to join the WCPT, a global board, which links all the physiotherapist professionals practising in the public institutions and the private set-ups".
The membership to the WCPT will also enable the Sultanate's physiotherapists to get exposure and to share knowledge and experiences with the neighbouring countries and other member states even as they persevere to render their abundantly needed professional services.
Likewise, in reference to the growing demand of the services of physiotherapists on the national level, the OPA has set up strategies to integrate their services to the mainstream of the community to enhance awareness in the Sultanate on the importance of physiotherapy and the lifestyle aspects, which mostly affects the quality of acceptable life to individuals and families at large, noted Al Harthy.
"In this context, the OPA extends its gratitude to the government and its respective institutions for the support and guidance it provided in making our achievement a success".
