Sharjah Al Wahda Road, which has caused traffic disruptions, is scheduled to open this August, a senior official announced yesterday.
"Around 80 per cent of the construction work has been completed on Al Wahda Road and will be opened to residents within five months," said Engineer Shaikh Khalid Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Director of Sharjah Directorate of Public Works.
He said the Economic Department had given compensation to a number of shops that had been affected by the expansion project.
"We also provided assistance to shop owners by launching a hotline to receive their complaints and suggestions, and have also built service roads to the areas that have been completed."
The project of expanding and upgrading Al Wahda Road was undertaken in two phases, "since it is considered one of the main roads in the city that is used on a daily basis by motorists," said Shaikh Khalid, as he was taking a tour of the road project yesterday.
Three sections
He said the project costs Dh841 million and will be inaugurated two months before the deadline.
"The road construction at Abu Shaghara is almost complete, and the intersection has been divided into three sections."
The first part consists of a viaduct, the second part is an intersection that leads to the commercial area of Abu Shaghara area, and the third part consists of a tunnel.
The viaduct at Al Yarmook area near the Gold Centre, which cost Dh565 million and has a length of 1800 metres, will be opened after two months while the road under the bridge will be opened after three months.
The viaduct is comprised of two lanes in each direction and will allow motorists easy access to and from Al Dhaid Road, while the road under the bridge comprises of three lanes in each direction.
