Vehicle registration procedures have been simplified following the implementation of a 'comprehensive employee' programme, said a senior official at the Traffic and Licences Section of Sharjah Police.

Maj. Khalifa Mohammed Bu Ghanim, head of the Vehicle Testing Division and acting director of Licences Section of Sharjah Police, said: "It takes customers little time to register their vehicles regardless of whether they are registering a new car, renewing or transferring ownership."

He said processing of transactions had been eased after the implementation of the 'comprehensive employee' plan some two years ago.

Maj. Bu Ghanim said customers must fill out the one-page application to register their vehicles. The application comprises detailed information about the applicant on one side, and the vehicle on the other side.

The application, he ad-ded, should be submitted along with the insurance letter, passport copy, no objection letter from the employer and one photograph. If the applicant holds a residence visa in another emirate, he or she should provide a residential address in Sharjah.

Applicants registering new vehicles should produce two-year insurance documents and one passport size photograph at the section's counter where, within a span of five minutes, the vehicle will be registered for two years without undergoing testing.

Applicants, however, need to fill out a different form to register imported vehicles, he added.

He said transfer certificates are needed if the vehicle is registered in another emirate or a customs certificate if imported from abroad.

The application and the accompanying documents are then submitted to the counter staff at the Vehicle Testing Division or at the used car garage (for imported vehicle registration) who do all the processing from verifying information to entering the data and fees payment.

Having finished the transaction at the counter, the car is sent to the Division's garage for testing, which marks the end of the transaction.

To process a transaction, he said, the applicant sho-uld first submit the application along with the required documents at the Vehicle Testing Division for data entry pertaining to the applicant and the vehicle.

The applicant then takes his vehicle for testing at the division's garage for testing. For registering imported vehicles, however, applicants are received at the division's counter which is located at the used car garages where applicants should produce a customs certificate along with other required documents, and vehicles are tested at the garage. Each transaction at these counters takes five minutes.

The training programme for the department's staff has been in place for the last two years. The training aims at simplifying transactions for the public. The latest course, which ended last week, was conducted for staff in the several sections and divisions of the Department.

The 23 participants comprised a number of police officials from the traffic department and staff from other government departments.
