Saudi Arabia's ministry of health is currently working to complete the King Abdullah Medical Complex project in north Jeddah by the end of 2013, an official source told Zawya.

The source speaking on condition of anonymity said that the complex accommodates 1,100 beds and is a complete and comprehensive medical facility covering a total area of 266,000 square meters. The project incorporates a specialized hospital with a 500-bed capacity, at a total cost of SAR 253.7 million and covering an area of 75,000 square meters. The project also includes a 50-bed intensive care unit, 20 incubators for newborns; in addition to an accident and trauma center, a neuroscience unit, a specialized fertility center, eight modern operation theaters, heart catheterization and blood vessel equipment, an advanced laboratory and 45 clinics of all specializations.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia had allocated a total of around SAR 100 billion from this year's budget for the health care and social development sector. Projects targeted include the completion and furnishing of primary health care centers in all areas of the Kingdom; the construction of 19 new hospitals and medical centers; completing the furnishing of a number of health facilities; and refurbishing current hospitals.

The source added that the complex also consists of a specialized ophthalmology hospital with a 200-bed capacity, at a total cost exceeding SAR 100 million. He added that the health authority in Jeddah was planning the construction of a specialized dental center containing 200 clinics, at a total estimated cost of SAR 120 million; among which are 100 clinics at the new medical center in north Jeddah, which will also contain a specialized rehabilitation unit.
