Riyadh and Jeddah airports will soon introduce a pre-clearance service for United States-bound passengers, allowing those flying to America to have their arrival documents assessed in Saudi Arabia before they arrive in the US, sources at the United States Customs and Border Protection told an Arabic daily newspaper in the kingdom. Currently Abu Dhabi International Airport in the United Arab Emirates is one of only a handful of airports in the world that offers the service, but its introduction in the emirate caused quite a backlash in the US.
Despite the political issues it raised, the facility at Abu Dhabi is “working very well”, a US Customs and Border Protection official told Gulf News in May 2015.
The service opened in January 2014, with early criticism that it created flight delays and gave Etihad Airways an unfair advantage. Read more here.
The UAE's state news agency WAM reported in May this year that a total of 615,478 passengers used the US pre-clearance facility at Abu Dhabi International Airport last year. Read more here.
