BEIRUT (Zawya Dow Jones)--The Westminster City Council has given its final approval of the masterplan presented by Qatari Diar Real Estate Investment Co. for the GBP3 billion Chelsea Barracks project that it intends to implement in London, Doha-based Asharq daily reports Wednesday.
The approval comes after 21 months of open consultations that showed a broad popular support for the project's plans, Mohammed Al Hadfa, chief executive of the state-owned Qatari Diar group, said according to the paper.
Qatari Diar had earlier ditched initial designs of the development project due to local opposition--that included Prince Charles--on the grounds that the designs didn't blend in with the classical aspect of the neighborhood, the daily reports.
The project involves the construction of 448 residential units, a sports center, a health center, and social clubs, Asharq reports.
