DOHA - The Public Transport Company (Mowasalat) is adding 100 new cars to its expanding fleet of Karwa taxis.
The new cabs will be on the streets from today, Ahmed Al Ansari, Mowasalat's marketing manager told The Peninsula yesterday.
This addition marks the third phase of an expansion plan, covering 1,000 cars to be completed by the end of this year.
The official hoped that introduction of new cars would ease the shortage of taxis, a persistent problem on the Doha streets. He said the taxi and bus services of the company have been working as normal during Ramadan.
"The passenger inflow is normal. But for the bus service, there are more users during the night schedules," he said.
The company plans to add more buses to meet the rush during the Eid Al Fitr holidays. "We have now 120 buses on the streets during week-ends. We plan to keep the same number during Eid holidays," Ahmed Al Ansari said.
He said upgrading of the company's website has been delayed due to some technical problems. The upgraded website is expected to be available within a week. It will provide information on the routes and timings of the bus service, online booking for Karwa, among other facilities.
The company will honour one of its taxi drivers for his honesty at a function being held at the company's premises today. The driver an Indian recently found $8,000 in his car, which was left by a Qatar Airways pilot. He contacted the pilot in the telephone number found with the money and returned the amount safely.
Ahmed Al Ansari said the company will award him one day salary along with a gift and a certificate of appreciation.
