MUSCAT -- Muscat Municipality opened on Wednesday night a newly constructed wadi bridge on Sultan Qaboos Street at Qurum, to vehicular traffic. The structure is part a package of road improvement works being undertaken in front of Al Harthy Complex by road construction specialists Federici Stirling Batco LLC. The new bridge, built on the outbound section of the carriageway, was operationalised at around midnight on Wednesday. Representatives of Muscat Municipality's Roads Department and the Royal Oman Police were on hand to supervise the rerouting of traffic from a temporary diversion on to the new wadi bridge.
Also present were senior representatives of contractors Federici Stirling Batco. The opening of the bridge, ahead of schedule, was made possible by the contractor's commitment to fast tracking the execution of the project. Early last year, Federici Stirling Batco was appointed by Muscat Municipality to undertake the design and construction of bridges and other road improvements in front of The Sultan Center -- Al Harthy Complex area. The contract, valued at 20.5 million rials, entails the construction of four bridges spanning the lower reaches of Wadi Adai where it intersects the road network in the area.
The contractor has already completed work on the outbound section of the 200-metre-long bridge where the wadi intersects Sultan Qaboos Street in front of Al Harthy Complex. Work on the inbound section of the wadi bridge is well under way. The wadi bridge replaces a box culvert that has generally proved ineffective in dealing with strong wadi flows, with the runoff often submerging the main road and impeding traffic. Part of this carriageway was also severely breached during the devastating floods of June 6, 2007.
A second bridge of a roughly similar length is under construction further downstream where the wadi runs in front of the Mercedes-Benz showroom. This bridge is key to ensuring access to the popular Qurum shopping area when the wadi is in full flow. Yet another bridge is being built across the wadi near the Nissan-Renault showrooms to facilitate access to the upscale residential complexes coming on the hilltops overlooking the wadi. Also as part of the contract, the wadi channel alongside The Sultan Center is being suitably desilted with embankments built on either side for a distance of around 700 metres.
