Dubai: The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) has acquired the latest high performance computer, SGI's Altix BX2 system, for use in oil reservoir studies.
Based on SGI's global shared-memory system architecture, the computer offers up to four times greater performance compared to Adnoc's present systems.
Gilbert Soufan, SGI General Manager for the Middle East and North Africa, said, "SGI's technology has helped Adnoc in critical areas of oil and gas exploration and production. The newly installed computer at Adnoc will provide the company a significant advantage in the area of oil reservoir studies."
The new system uses a single image of the operating system, and unlike the cluster technology, this architecture is much easier to deploy and use, according to Adnoc.
The technology allows fast access to all data in the system's memory directly and efficiently, "without having to move data through I/O or networking bottlenecks."
