Muscat - Aer Rianta International (ARI) and BTA Catering have been named as preferred bidders for the duty free and food & beverage contracts respectively at New Muscat International Airport, a report said. Both ARI and BTA will have a ten-year contract to operate at the new airport, which is likely to open for public in 2017, The Moodie Report said. The Ministry of Transport and Communications has confirmed that with around 90 per cent of the work complete, the airport will be open for trials by the year-end.

It may be noted that the tenders floated by OAMC invited several international operators. The new airport will feature 18,000 sqm of commercial space. Under the Duty Free and Luxury Retail package, ARI will operate an area of 5,320 sqm and provide core category duty free products in addition to luxury fashion & accessories, watches, toys and gourmet foods & confectionery. BTA will manage 3,560 sqm of dining space in the new facility.  It may be noted that the number of passengers at Muscat International Airport exceeded for first time ever 10 million passengers, up 18 per cent. Additionally, Muscat International Airport broke first time. Flight movements increased at Muscat Airport by 15 per cent, exceeding 95,000 movements. The 29-gate passenger terminal building with the latest state-of-the-art technology will accommodate 12 million passengers annually.
