DOHA - The Public Transport Company (Mowasalat) is planning to set up bus stations outside Doha city as part of efforts to expand and diversify its bus service.

The company recently opened its newly renovated central bus terminus at Al Ghanim at the Grand Hamad Street in Doha. It has plans to set up new bus stations in Al Khor, Al Wakra, Al Rayyan, Al Shamal, Mesaieed and Dukhan, Mohammed Rashid Al Mohannadi, director of public service and maintenance at Mowasalat told Al Sharq.

He said, only 20 per cent of the land allotted for the company near its head quarters at the Industrial area has now been used for parking the Karwa taxis and buses. The sprawling premises with a total area of 298,000 sq meters will house the proposed Karwa City.

A new road connecting the company's headquarters with the Abu Hamour road has already been open to allow free flow for the Karwa taxis and buses. This road is exclusively for the Mowasalat vehicles. It will be maintained by Ashghal while the Traffic and Patrol Department has been supervising it.

The road provides an easy outlet for the buses and taxis to the city without being affected by the heavy traffic at the Abou Hamour road leading to the Industrial Area, the official said.

He said the proposed Karwa city will include a huge parking area for buses and cars, accommodation for the company staff, training centre for drivers, six workshops, 30 petrol bunkers and three restaurants, among other facilities. Work on the project is expected to begin next year, he added.
