MUSCAT: The International Maritime College Oman (IMCO), which recently relocated its premises to Sohar from Seeb, is planning to offer new long-term programmes.

The college, which accommodates more than 1,000 students from various countries, offers education and training (diploma and degree programmes) in the field of maritime studies, port management, shipping and transport and operation technology. Presently, IMCO offers short-term courses, often tailor-made for the industry as well as for port and shipping related companies.

"We are now planning to offer courses in Marine Pilotage. All of these are helping the country in moulding trained professionals," Said bin Hamdoon Al Harthy, undersecretary of Ports and Marine Affairs, Ministry of Transport and Communications, told Times of Oman. "We are getting students from outside the country."

Presently, students from Qatar, Bahrain, India, Kazakhstan, Nigeria, Cameroon, Egypt, Jordan and Yemen are studying for various programmes in the college. "Our facility in Sohar is one of the most modern in the world and definitely one of the best in the region."

Traditionally, Oman was known as a seafaring nation. In the last seven to eight decades, the Sultanate gradually began adapting to the ever-changing shipping technology (including engineering, navigation and electronics).

The maritime college and the state-owned Oman Shipping Company (OSC) are definitely helping the Sultanate make a great leap forward in applying these technologies.

New Sohar campus

The new college complex in Sohar, which is close to the port, has all kinds of facilities, including simulators for ship handling and port operations as well as for training logistics managers. These simulators are also unique for the region, added Al Harthy.

Al Harthy, who is also the chairman of the maritime college, said that the college commenced its new academic year from the new premises.

Students can either choose for a career at sea (deck officer or marine engineering officer) or a career ashore (port, shipping and transport management as well as Operations Technology/Engineering).
International Maritime College Oman is supported by the STC-Group from Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The STC-Group has over 25 years experience in providing an innovative learning environment for students in the maritime, transport, and oil and gas industries.

Oman Shipping Company, ports and the Ministry of Transport and Communications have all started picking up students who graduated from IMCO.
