KUWAIT: Kuwait Municipality Chairman Roudhan Al-Roudhan, led yesterday the inauguration of a beach project at the Arabian Gulf street near the former site of Marriott Hotel.

Al-Roudhan disclosed that the beach project was a gift of the state of Kuwait to the people. The beach is an ideal place for families where they can spend their leisure time during weekends and holidays as they savour the beauty of nature along the seashore. He commended the engineers for completing the project in such a short period of time. He also lauded their proficiency for a job well done.

"We are proud to have the Shuwaikh beach project in this excellent shape. This is the fruit of national efforts, through the goodwill of municipality engineers who carried on their shoulders the implementation, preparation, and supervision of the project as a whole," he pointed out. The project cost nearly KD 1 million. He recalled that the municipality received high bids from companies that wanted to do the project. "The lowest offer was KD 2.5 million. What makes us more happy is that we have done this project without any damage to the environment, not even side effects," he stressed. They started their work by cleaning up the beach and the surroundings from trash and rocks and have kept the marine wealth such as corals in the place.

Al-Roudhan added that this beach will remain as a symbol of goodwill of the Kuwaitis after it was destroyed during the Iraqi invasion in 1990.

Despite the destruction caused by the invasion, the Kuwaitis stood firm and accepted the challenge of rebuilding the country from the
atrocities of war. "We are making every destroyed structure better than before. Congratulations to all the people for making this endeavour a great success. Congratulations also to the country whose engineers painstakingly created a touristic site," he stated.

Meanwhile, Engineer Khaled Abdulmohsen, the deputy general manager explained to the attendees the whole project and its building process. He cited that the Shuwaikh beach is two kms long and was divided into three phases. Phase one is the garden and parking place, phase two is the pavement especially made for people walking on the beach which is about 2.5 km.

Finally, the third phase is the one connected to the beach which is about 1 km in length. It is fully-equipped with all the amenities and services for the visitors such as 150 chairs along the beach, 35 umbrellas and a spacious yard where the kids can play. The beach was decorated with 55 palm trees in addition to three service centres. Abdulmohsen thanked those who participated in this project especially the ministry of planning and ministry of electricity and water for their support especially in financing the decoration of the beach.

He also thanked the municipality for their continued support in building such projects.
