DIYALA - French company Alcatel-Lucent will build a land communications network in Diayla and Anbar Provinces at a cost of $27 million USD (32 billion IQD). It will link 70,000 telephone subscribers, according to a Diyala Province spokesman.

Bassam Salem al-Zaidi told AKnews that the French company will start work "in the coming months" in Diyala and at a cost of $13 million USD (15 billion IQD) it will connect 35,000 subscribers. Work in Anbar get the next 35.000 talking will begin following the Diyala portion.

Communications in Iraq, like most other services, is limited as a result of long years of neglect due to wars, embargoes and mismanagement. Mobile phones is the main way for communication in the country which makes internet access extremely slow for most people.

More than nine million Iraqis have a mobile phone and they often complain of poor service.
