Sohar -- The Sultanate yesterday celebrated the first day of the blessed Eid al Fitr. His Majesty Sultan Qaboos performed Eid prayers at the Sultan Qaboos Mosque in the Wilayat of Sohar. His Majesty was accompanied by His Highness Sayyid Shihab bin Tareq al Said, Adviser to His Majesty the Sultan; Sayyid Ali bin Hamoud al Busaidy, Minister of the Diwan of the Royal Court; Gen Ali bin Majid al Maamari, Minister of the Royal Office; Shaikh Ahmed bin Mohammed al Isaee, Chairman of Majlis Ash'shura; Sayyid Badr bin Saud al Busaidy, Minister Responsible for Defence Affairs; Maj Gen Sultan bin Mohammed al Numani, Secretary-General of the Royal Court Affairs; Sayyid Saud bin Ibrahim al Busaidy, Minister of the Interior; Lt Gen Malik bin Sulaiman al Maamari, Inspector General of Police and Customs; and Shaikh Abdullah bin Mohammed al Salmy, Minister of Awqaf and Religious Affairs.
Al Salmy, who led the prayers, began the Eid al Fitr sermon by praising and thanking the Almighty for His blessings, stressing the importance of learning the lessons derived from the School of Fasting in building the individual and nation. He pointed out that making man as God's agent on the Earth is based on the strength of religion and mind. He said that civilisation and glory is linked with religion and mind to achieve the interest and happiness of mankind, citing a verse from the Holy Quran which says: "The month of Ramadhan is that in which the Quran was revealed, a guidance to men and clear proofs of the guidance and the distinction".
About religions and beliefs embraced by people, Al Salmy pointed out that the difference between them is firm and determined. The Sharia determines man's relations with God and with his fellowmen who vary in their understanding of the Sharia. "We find some people moderate and some extreme when following religions and beliefs", he added. The religion of Islam is providing man with good manners and conduct and rectifying the society by the Sharia and law. He cited a verse from the Holy Quran: "He who does good from men or women and they are believers, surely we will give them good living and reward them best for their good deeds".
He said the value of behaviour and manners in the religion are associated with the principle of belief in God, thus denoting its stance, importance and role in stability of societies and happiness of humanity. Al Salmy highlighted two important values which determine Muslims' relations with others; namely the get-together and competition which calls for establishing contact between nations and openness with other civilisations and call for the good. As the Islamic Sharia is based on repair of soul and nation and steadiness of international relations and stability of mankind, the Sharia came to maintain the soul, religion, mind, mankind and kinship.
He called upon all individuals with different religions through international and humanitarian organisation to maintain these five principles. Al Salmy said competition to do good things denote the need of mankind for interaction among civilisations and its importance for the continuity of life. Such competition is governed by three rules that protect the safety of great values, establish right trend in relations between the nation and humanity in general and the principles of mind, justice and morals, he added. He attributed the today's low morals to ignorance of the value of contacts and good deeds. The other problem faced by humanity today is evident in separation between religion and morals in the principle of international and human relations.
The demand for establishing an international moral system without any religious reference before human lifetime values are both considered as aspects of extremism which can only lead to abandonment of religion and morals, he added. Al Salmy prayed to Allah the Almighty to support His Majesty the Sultan with wisdom, grant him success and protect him. He also prayed to the Almighty to make Oman a secure, safe and stable country, protect the Muslim world, unite them, grant them good living, make their homes safe and protect all against evils. After the prayers, the Sultan of Oman's Artillery fired a 21-gun salute for His Majesty and to celebrate the happy occasion.
