AMMAN - The Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) has set several regulations for sheep traders to follow when selling and slaughtering sheep in Amman during Eid Al Adha.

Osama Dabbas, the municipality's deputy director for public services, said in a statement made available to The Jordan Times that traders must abide by the conditions to ensure the safety of residents' health and the city's environment.

He said sheep traders must pay JD200 to use GAM's stockyards and slaughtering facilities during the four-day Eid and the three days preceding it. They also must provide a JD300 deposit as insurance, which they will forfeit if they do not abide by the regulations.

In addition, sheep imported from outside Jordan should be in accordance with health standards.

Moreover, merchants should ensure their workers' safety while slaughtering the sheep by providing them with adequate equipment.

Dabbas noted that traders are not allowed to slaughter sheep in stockyards but must take them to GAM's slaughterhouse in the Ain Ghazal area in Amman.

GAM will provide the traders with 200 square-metre stockyards complete with stalls and teams of veterinarians to inspect the sheep and oversee the slaughtering process.

The stockyards, where consumers can go to purchase sheep, are located in the Basman, Nasir, Tariq, Qweismeh, Yasmin, Tlaa Ali and Shafa Badran areas.

Eid Al Adha marks the end of the pilgrimage season, when Muslims of sufficient means are required to sacrifice livestock in remembrance of the Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail to God.
