TUNIS - The project on "Food Security and Traceability in Maghreb Countries" (MAG-TRACE) was the focal point of a news conference held on Wednesday in Tunis by Maghreb Farmers Union (UMAGRI) Chairman and Head of the Tunisian Farming and Fisheries Union Mabrouk el Bahri.

Thi Mag-Trace project is proposed by UMAGRI as part of the programme "Invest in Med" which is financed by the European Commission.

It aims at building the capacity of farming operators in Tunisia, Morocco and Algeria to adopt advanced parameters in matters of food security and traceability.

MAG-TRACE is also designed to publicise the approach set up in Egypt through the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation, UNIDO ETRACE Programme in the three Maghreb countries, to disseminate good methods and practices developed in matters of food security.

This process will help Maghreb farming producers comply with traceability procedures to better export their products in Europe.

This project will be presented in the Maghreb stand, as part of the International Farming, Agricultural Mechanisation and Fisheries Exhibition (SIAMAP 2009) due next November 18-22 at El Kram Exhibitions Park.

Mr. Mabrouk El Bahri said the setting up of the new premises of UMAGRI in Tunis is an important step on the path of strengthening the role of this structure in boosting the agricultural sector in Maghreb countries.

UMAGRI was created on May 21, 1989, under an agreement between national farming organisations in Maghreb countries.

In 2007, Tunisia was chosen to host the Union's permanent headquarters.
