Sharjah: ‘The lure of beauty’ exhibition which displays drawings and photography charting a 100 years in the fashion world was inaugurated yesterday at Sharjah Museum.
The exhibition which was inaugurated by Shaikha Budoor Bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq) will continue until November 30.
The gallery which was organised by Sharjah Museums Department (SMD), in collaboration with the Department of Culture and Information will include a collection of 450 fashion illustrations and photographs by art collector Martin Fervers.
Fervers told Gulf News that to him the gallery is not just about the aesthetic beauty of fashion but it is also about the history that comes with these pieces.
“I started collecting fashion artwork in the early 90s; I first started with portraits of celebrities. I was not aware that it will get this big and I never intended to build up a collection, I always worked piece by piece.”
‘The Lure of Beauty’ documents 100 years of fashion drawings, illustrations and photography, from the early part of the 20th century, through the 1950s and ’60s to the turn of the millennium.
“I want people viewing my collection to firstly like what they see but secondly and most importantly I want them to take as much knowledge as they can about the history development of fashion that are often affected by the surrounding of that period,” added Fervers.
The gallery includes 60 pencil-sketches from 1930-60 that were created for fashion labels such as Christian Dior, Jacques Fath and Pierre Balmain.
Alya Al Mulla the curator at Sharjah Art Museum said that the gallery is the first of its kind.
“Sharjah Art Museam was very excited about this exhibition. It is the first time that we had a chance to display fashion related pieces and it is the first time that fashion pieces that date back to a 100 years were displayed at such a big scale,” said Alya.
The exhibition will also include sketches published during the ’30s and ’40s in the era’s iconic fashion magazines, such Harper´s Bazaar and the American, British and French Vogue.
