Emirates Post is likely to become a global entity, operating a fleet of aircraft to handle its international courier service, said its top official.
The government-owned postal service is also in talks to buy out some postal organisations as part of its Gulfwide expansion plan.
Abdullah Al Daboos, director-general of Emirates Post, said it is venturing into shipping, financial, freight and international courier services as part of its diversification plan. Emirates Post is also considering privatisation. He said Deutsche Post has expressed interest in buying a stake.
"We are currently working on a number of projects in order to diversify our business and expand beyond the UAE," Al Daboos said at the opening session of the World Mail, Express and Air Cargo Expo, Middle East and Africa, currently taking place at the Dubai World Trade Centre.
"If everything works out as per plan, we might operate an aircraft fleet in two years time. Currently there is a huge demand for additional capacity to handle mail and there is not enough space in the existing airline and courier suppliers.
"We are also talking to a number of companies in freight and shipping as well as a global financial institution, to expand our services."
He said some of the facilities of Emirates Post will be demolished to make space for commercial towers, with additional space to be rented out. The organisation serves customers through 300,000 postal boxes and 1,050 employees. Last year it generated Dh300 million in revenue.
