A court has been set up at Al Muraqqabat Police Station and the initiative could be extended to other police stations, if it proves successful.
Head of the new court Judge Saeed Salim Bin Sarm can give instant rulings on suspects detained at the station. Those convicted will be moved to Dubai Central Prison.
Judge Mohammad Yousuf Salih, Dubai Court's Department (DCD) Acting Director, told Gulf News the court had been established on the orders of General Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Dubai Crown Prince and UAE Defence Minister.
Its establishment was a joint effort between Dubai police, the Public Prosecution Department and the courts department with the aim of reducing the overflow of cases at the department's main building.
"The new court is currently functioning twice a week on a trial basis. We are waiting to see the results, which are looking promising.
The initiative could be extended to other police stations soon," Judge Salih said.
He said two new courts could also be set up in Al Barsha and Al Qusais but the decision had not yet been finalised.
Judge Salih said rulings which had been passed recently included alcohol-related offences and failure to pay commercial debts.
He praised the Dubai Attorney-General Essam Eisa Al Humaidan and Dubai police for setting up the court so quickly.
A Department official said the court's jurisdiction could be extended to deal with more serious crimes such as theft and murder.
In case of appeals against the primary ruling, cases will be held in the DCD's main building.
