The owners will then have to pay not only the cost of the work but also 20% in administration costs
The Dubai Municipality, in their effort to keep the city clean and safe, has issued an ultimatum to owners of a few abandoned buildings in Dubai.
The new order will be applicable to 16 buildings in Rashidiya, Abu Hail, Al-Mizhar, Al-Qusais, Al-Hamriya, Al-Qouz, Umm-Suqiem, Ras Al-Khore and Jebel Ali.
The civic body has given the listed owners a two-week deadline to complete repair work or demolish it.
And, in case they are unable to meet the deadline, the authority will step in and demolish it. The owners will then have to pay the cost of the work, along with 20 per cent additional as administration costs.
The step is being carried out to maintain the aesthetic beauty of the city as well as to ensure the health and safety of the public.
The authorities pointed out most of these abandoned buildings serving as a "hot-bed to insects and other creatures that risk health of the residents".
Also, in some instances, such buildings were found to be used by illegal people to carry out unlicensed business.
The Dubai Municipality has urged building owners to dial 800900 for more information.
