The Cosumar, the only private industrial group making sugar in Morocco, is planning a future establishment in the industrial zone of the Jorf Lasfar port, as part of its offensive strategy to face up to the forthcoming liberalization of the Moroccan sugar sector.
The Cosumar has recently acquired a 24 ha site in the Jorf Lasfar zone to be used either as a second refinery or, at the worst, as a storage area.
This move constitutes a strategic option by the national sugar leader in reply to the new national sugar deal, marked recently by the entry of the Chabi group through its subsidiary company, the Moroccan Refining Company (with a capital of MAD 400 million).
The Chaabi group, while showing its interest for the sector, remains discrete concerning the location of its future refinery. However, there is the possibility of an eventual establishment in the north of the country.
