KUWAIT: Kuwait Municipality has signed a contract with local construction firm Abu Shiba Trading Co., which will see the country gaining one of the most modern food quality control laboratories in the region within the next three years.

The contract was signed yesterday at the municipality's headquarters building, with Dr. Fadhil Safar, the Minister of Public Works and State Minister for Municipal Affairs, revealing afterwards that this is the first construction project of its kind to be undertaken by the municipality.

The municipality will supervise and execute this project in cooperation with a local contractor and the project is being undertaken in cooperation with the Ministry of Public Works and the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research," the minister explained, adding, "Other parties will also cooperate with us on further projects.

The Municipality plans a variety of other projects, Dr. Safar revealed. "The municipality is carrying out administrative projects for the 'Shaheed Tower' and the municipal council," he revealed, adding, "These projects are part of the state's development plan and we are attaining achievements. All these plans have come at the right time.

The food quality control lab is an entirely new departure for the municipality, the minister stressed. Ahmad Al-Subaih, the Director General of Kuwait Municipality and head of the higher committee working on this project, said, "The municipality obtained exceptional leave to execute and oversee this huge project, and I think it will meet expectations. This project will be on an international level and will compete with other similar projects being carried out in other GCC countries in both the technology and the equipment being used.

The food quality control lab is being constructed on a 15,000 square meter site in Shuwaikh. The construction work is projected to be completed within two years, while equipping and furnishing the facility will take a further year, meaning that it's scheduled for completion in three years. "This central laboratory will contain all kinds of food materials," said the director of the municipality's development projects department Yousif Al-Munawer. "It's the biggest project in the region and will cost KD 7.661 million.
