JEDDAH: Members of the Jeddah City Council paid a surprise visit to the city's historical area on Tuesday to oversee construction work in the runup to Ramadan.

"The point of this visit was to see first hand the progress being made at the market such as paving the floor and fixing lampposts in preparation for Ramadan," said Hussein Baaqeel, chairman of the  council.

Jeddah Gov. Prince Mishaal bin Majed ordered the construction work to be carried out around the clock to ensure the project is completed.

"Cooperation between all parties involved in this project, including Adnan Adas who is project manager for the historic area, has been noted and their efforts have been appreciated," said Hassan Al-Zahrani, deputy chairman of the  council.

Current construction work in the historical area is focused on four main roads. Twenty-nine percent of Al-Nada has been completed with some 430 meters of pavement laid out. Thirty-three percent of Abu Onaba Road has been completed with more than 5,000 meters of pavement cleaned and fixed. Contractors said the road will be ready in early Ramadan.  Al-Aidarous Road and Alawi Road will also be completed at the end of the month.

"Constriction work in the historic area is going as planned and we have received permission to remove all obstacles in our way, especially as work was stalled for more than nine months," said Sami Nawar, director of tourism and culture at the municipality.
