Work begins soon on the new $20 million north Manama dhow harbour (NMDH) after authorities gave the green light for the construction of the high-profile centrepiece of the Bahrain Financial Harbour development.

Bahrain Financial Harbour Holding Company (BFHHC) yesterday announced it has received the final go-ahead from the General Directorate for the Protection of Marine Resources and the Ministry of Municipalities and Agriculture for reclamation and the complete upgrading of the existing NMDH.

The area to be reclaimed will exceed 44,000 square metres, providing the land required for constructing part of the commercial west project, the public road connecting a hotel and dhow-harbour facilities to King Faisal Highway with public landscaped areas to the west of the development. In addition the reclaimed area will host part of the development's waste-water treatment plant, a water reservoir and an elevated tank site, a 66-kilowatt substation site and land for various future harbour facilities.

Company chief executive officer Stephen Rothel said: "BFH is very proud to finance and construct this project which has been commissioned in keeping with the previous environmental impact study commissioned by us.

"Our aim is to contribute towards the efforts being made to restore the element of magnificence in the fishing harbours of Bahrain, and we regard the construction of this project as an important step towards achieving the goal."
