Construction has begun on the much - awaited housing project in Al Qalah village.
The project will consist of 63 houses built on 2.4 hectares of land and will benefit scores of families.
Although construction was supposed to start a few years ago, it was delayed due to the discovery of an archaeological site on the land earmarked for the project. Last week, an alternate plot of land in Al Qalah was allocated for the project and transferred from the Ministry of Culture to the Ministry of Housing, allowing for construction work on the project to commence.
The original plot was fenced up and is now being excavated by the Ministry of Culture.
Acting Director of Housing Construction and Maintenance Sami Mandeel yesterday met Al Qalah villagers Hajj Salman Abdulla and Mohammed Abdul-Aziz, in the presence of the Members of Parliament Sayed Maki Al Wida'ee and A. Jalil Khalil to discuss the project and the progress that has been made so far.
Mandeel assured the residents that the project will be completed at the earliest.
The MPs expressed satisfaction over the ministry's efforts to expedite the project and thanked the minister for his commitment.
