Amman - The Lower House of Parliament on Sunday unanimously elected Deputy Faisal Al Fayez as Speaker as he ran for the legislature's top job unopposed after four contenders dropped from the race only days before today's opening of parliament's first ordinary session.

Salt Deputy Mahmoud Kharabsheh, the only remaining challenger of Fayez, withdrew his candidacy just minutes before the house was due to hold a vote, giving Fayez victory by acclamation.

The house met under the chairmanship of lawmaker Hamad Abu Zaid, the eldest deputy in the House as stipulated by the House's internal rules, immediately after His Majesty King Abdullah II addressed the inaugural session attended by Prime Minister Samir Rifai and cabinet members.
