ABU DHABI: Bids from six international consortia pre-qualified for Abu Dhabi's Al Mirfa independent water and power project (IWPP) were opened today by Abu Dhabi Water & Electricity Authority (ADWEA).
An agreement to buy water and electricity is expected to be signed on 13th July 2013 with the winner of the bid for the 1,600-megawatt (MW) and 52.5 million gallons per day Al Mirfa plant, while the other contracts and agreements relating to the project are expected to be signed on 15th September 2013, according to Abdulla Saif AL Nuaimi, ADWEA's Director General, in remarks during the session today. The winning developer will responsible for building the Mirfa plant and operating it under a build-own-operate contract. He emphasised ADEWA's interest in ensuring a transparent tendering process and in giving an equal opportunity to bidding developers. Al Mirfa plant is the tenth project to be privatised in the emirate of Abu Dhabi and is part of efforts to meet the emirate's increasing demand for electricity and water. The increasing demand creates new opportunities for developers in other projects, he noted. On the first of January 1999, the formation of Al Mirfa Power Company was announced to include both of Al Mirfa central plant and Madinat Zayed Power Plant as a joint stock corporation.Copyright Emirates News Agency (WAM) 2013.
