The World Justice Project Confirms Moroccan Minister of Justice as Keynote Speaker of Middle East and North Africa Regional Rule of Law Conference

The World Justice Project (WJP) is pleased to announce the confirmation of Minister Naciri as opening keynote speaker of the WJP's upcoming Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Regional Rule of Law Conference to be held at Al Akhawayn University on June 25-26 in Ifrane, Morocco.

The WJP MENA Rule of Law Conference will highlight Morocco as a case study for justice reforms applying a multidisciplinary approach in a panel discussion featuring Tunisian Minister of Justice and Human Rights Lazhar Boubouny and Anthropologist and Islamic law specialist Ziba Mir-Hosseini.

Morocco has made significant headway in the area of legal and judicial reforms; these reforms go beyond the justice system to address barriers to opportunity and equity in social, economic, and political fields.

Justice Minister Mohamed Naciri recently underlined that Morocco is fully committed to forge ahead with the reform of the judiciary, according Agence Maghreb Presse. Launched under the leadership of HM King Mohammed VI, the reform aims to modernize justice administrative structure, ensure the independence of the judiciary, and speed up the process of trials as priorities.

The Kingdom's commitment to justice reform has manifested itself in the improvement of women's and youth rights--the 2004 reform of Moroccan family law, the Moudawana, being a chief example. Additionally, legal reforms aimed at improving the economic environment--for example, revising regulatory laws, bolstering intellectual property rights, and establishing commercial law courts--have aided the Kingdom in maintaining relative economic stability in the wake of the global economic crisis.

The World Justice Project's MENA 2010 Regional Rule of Law Conference in Morocco will be its first regional mainstreaming meeting in the Middle East and North Africa region.
