Amman - United Nations Relief and Works Agency UNRWA staff on Sunday begin an open-ended strike to press their demands for a pay allowance of JD100, maintaining previous allowances and better work conditions.
The work stoppage would severely disrupt health, education and other social services the agency offers to Palestinian refugees living in 13 refugee camps and other areas in the Kingdom.
Sources of UNRWA workers' committees told Petra on Saturday that the strike would continue until the UNRWA management met their "legitimate" demands.
The Palestinian Affairs Department, which has jurisdiction over the refugee camps, had repeatedly refused comment to Petra on the strike, which will hit UNRWA services in the camps spread across the Kingdom.
The management of UNRWA, which provides basic services to more than 5 million Palestinian refugees in five areas of operations-- Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, the West Bank and Gaza Strip-- had offered a 5 percent salary hike, but the workers' committees had turned it down and insisted on action.
