Al Futtaim Carillion won the 'Contractor of the Year Award' at the inaugural Gulf State Building Award 2008. The contractor beat three other contenders Arabtec, Al Jaber Engineering and Contracting and Dubai Contracting Company.

According to the organisers, the UK-based publication Building, Al Futtaim Carillion won the award because it has "juggled the demands of sustainability, health and safety and its own growth to complete some of the biggest projects in the region". Its accident frequency rate was just 0.02 over the year, while it has reduced Co2 emissions and initiated waste management plans on its sites.

Among other notable winners were Mohammed bin Ali Alabbar of Emaar Properties, who was given the 'Personality of the Year Award' for placing the UAE at the centre of the international business community.

Atkins was named 'Engineering Consultant of the Year' following its work on projects such as the Bahrain World Trade Centre, while EC Harris beat Davis Langdon and Mace to win the 'Construction Consultant of the Year Award'.

Foster + Partners won 'Architect of the Year Award', while the Sustainability Award went to Zighy Bay Senses Hideway Hotel in Oman. Director of architectural heritage department at Dubai Municipality Rashid Mohammed Bukhash won the 'Sustainable Champion Award' for valuing cultural heritage.

'Hotel project of the Year Award' went to Shangri La Qaryat Al Beri Hotel in Abu Dhabi, while the 14-lane Al Garhoud Bridge in Dubai won 'Infrastructure Project of the Year Award'.

Downtown Burj Dubai won 'Best Mixed-Use Project of the Year Award', while cultural award was won by A'Samaliah Island.

Commercial project winner was Abu Dhabi Investment Authority. Health and safety initiative went to Build Safe Dubai.
