BEIRUT (Zawya Dow Jones)--Syria plans to invest EUR3 billion to set up new power plants as part of its 11th five-year plan that was launched at the beginning of the current year, pan-Arab Al Hayat daily reports Wednesday citing the country's minister of electricity Imad Khamis.
The Syrian government has allocated 350 billion Syrian pounds ($7.38 billion), under the five-year plan, to support the country's power sector and plans to focus on renewable energy resources for electricity generation such as wind and solar energy, the paper reports.
The ministry of electricity has prepared a study to buy 100,000 solar heaters at a combined value of SYP4 billion, Khamis said according to the daily.
Syria's annual production of electric power is 46 billion kilowatt-hours while demand for energy is growing by about three billion kilowatt-hours annually, Al Hayat cites him as saying.
