Abu Dhabi, May 7th, 2012 (WAM) -- A little bit of effort can go a long way. That's the lesson to be taken from the nationwide Can Collection Drive organised by the Emirates Environmental Group, a UAE daily said.

Thanks to the campaign, more than 16,000 kg of aluminium cans were diverted from waste at landfills to the group's recycling programme.

The cans more than a million of them if cast into landfills sites, would take nearly a century to break down. But more importantly, the cans would represent resources wasted, Gulf News said in its today's editorial.

"The lesson from the group's collection efforts is that more needs to be done to ensure that every can is recycled. Recycling efforts tend to get lost in neighbourhoods where residents are transient and language barriers are an issue. By investing time and effort, everyday household objects normally considered as waste can be reduced, reused and recycled," the paper added.

The can recycling programme is evidence once more that you can change the environment by thinking globally, acting locally.
