MUSCAT: The tourism sector has contributed significantly to the national economy, according to tourism statistics revealed by Ministry of National Economy.
The initial results of the study, which was prepared in cooperation with the World Tourism Organisation indicated that the tourism sector in Oman contributed RO507 million, which represented 2.9 per cent of GDP in 2009 compared to 2.4 per cent in 2008 and 2.7 per cent in 2007.
The Ministry of National Economy along with the Ministry of Tourism issued the indicators' summary of the tourism statistics. It included a number of indicators for the tourism sector in Oman for the years 2005-2009. The tourism sector according to the statistics played a major role in the national economic development.
The summary mentioned that tourism consumption in 2009, which includes expenses by the local and foreign tourists has reached RO1,034 million, while spending for the people coming to visit the Sultanate represented a value of RO144 million, equivalent to 14 per cent of the total tourism consumption in the country.
The total expenditure of local tourism for citizens and residents is estimated at RO662 million which adds up to 64 per cent of the total tourism consumption in 2009. This included spending in the Sultanate before and after travelling for Omanis and expatriates who had flown out of the Sultanate as also expenses on local airlines. It also includes all expenses within the Sultanate in addition to the total production activity of travel and tourism agencies.
The government summary of statistics also noted that expenditures of outbound tourism from the Omanis and residents who had flown out of the Sultanate during 2009 amounted to about RO228 million.
The number of visitors to the Sultanate in inbound tourism during 2009 was about 1,586,979 from various nationalities compared to 1,614,703 visitors in 2008 and 1,359,510 visitors in 2007.
The outbound Omanis and expatriate tourists in the Sultanate were numbered in 2009 about 2,469,711 tourists, compared to 3,099,933 and 2,945,082 tourists in the years 2008 and 2007, respectively.
The summary of statistics showcases that outbound tourism is larger than inbound tourism here in the Sultanate whether it is in the number of visitors or the expenses incurred by the tourists.
Although, there is a growing importance of inbound tourism to the Oman economy, but the indications tell that the Sultanate imports very high tourism services as compared to the exports.
The total number of visitors who were received by the Sultanate is less than the number of visitors flying out from Oman to other countries. This is also the case when the expenditure incurred by Omanis is compared to that of the expenditure by incoming tourists
