According to new rules issued by the General Department of Naturalisation and Foreign Affairs in Abu Dhabi, residents of the emirate will now have to present a valid residency contract, latest utility bill and a valid home telephone number when it comes time to renew their residency visa.

The new paperwork requirements come from the implementation of a Ministry of Interior, which has a responsibility to ensure the emirate’s records contain up to date information. and it’s hard to argue with that logic.

Up to date information ensures that families and individuals are provided with suitable accommodation for their needs, allowing authorities to maintain sufficient data for proper and orderly planning, and allows for processing of statistics. These are vital when it comes to providing essential services in health or education — or even when it comes to planning for infrastructure needs such as public transport.

The new rules will also allow city planners to make recommendations on parking requirements and help end some of the woes faced by motorists in Abu Dhabi. and that’s a good thing.
