Gaza A few years ago no one could have imagined that thousands of civilians would throng the grounds of the main military security compound (Al Saraya) in the Gaza Strip.
The main security compound, which used to contain the biggest jail in Gaza, has now been turned into a public market full of various goods which draws many people from all over Gaza.
Palestinian bulldozers and construction vehicles began removing the rubble of Al Saraya security compound in Gaza six months after Israeli warplanes levelled it.
The compound was destroyed by Israeli missiles on December 28, 2008, the second day of Israel’s assault on Gaza.
Commercial centre
Prime Minister in the de facto government in Gaza, Esmail Haniya, had promised to remove the Al Saraya security compound in the centre of Gaza City and build in its place a big commercial centre.
Among hundreds of tents traders shout to promote their goods amidst the bustle of Eid Al Adha celebrations.
Abu Ahmad, a trader, rented one of the tents to sell his assorted nuts and candies.
“Despite the availability of items, the market is not alive since most Gazans cannot afford them,” Abu Ahmad said.
The municipality provides logistical support, but it is the Ministry of Public Works and Housing that has spearheaded the project.
