DOHA (Zawya Dow Jones)--Qatar awarded a 4.5 billion Qatari riyal ($1.2 billion) contract on the new Doha seaport project to a joint venture between a local company and Belgian group DEME, a statement said late Sunday.

Middle East Dredging Co., a tie-up between Qatar Holding, Qatari developer United Development Co., or UDC, and Belgian group DEME, will dredge the approach channel for the QAR27 billion deepwater port located between Al Wakrah and Mesaieed, south of the capital Doha, a UDC statement said.

The contract also includes the dredging of a basin, as well as land reclamation for a new base for Qatar's Navy together with the construction of two outer breakwaters on both sides of the channel.

The New Doha Port is one of many ambitious infrastructure projects Qatar is building over the coming years. It will cater for an expected spike in the country's trade and will handle everything from container traffic to livestock imports and cruise vessels.

Work will start this month and will be completed in early 2016, UDC said.
