For the first time on Sunday, the Labour Market Regulatory Authority registered its daily target of about 7,000 expatriates since it began the process at the Bahrain International Exhibition Convention Centre (BIECC) on June 4.

The enrolment process ends on June 21.

"We registered 6,805 people on Sunday, taking the total number of expatriates enrolled since June 4 to 25,661," project executive director Hassan Al Rahma told the Tribune.

The festival witnessed a low turnout on the first four days and only about 2,700-odd people registered on Friday.

"We expected to be swamped on Friday because it was a public holiday," an LMRA spokesperson said.

In the last few months there had been a rush of people to register at enrolment centres set up around the Kingdom. Many arrived at the centres before time and waited for their turn but had to return home without completing the process in view of the rush.  Expatriate labourers had camped outside some centres to ensure their registration the following day.

The LMRA, taking into consideration the inconvenience,  suspended enrolment at all centres and opened a centralised venue at the BIECC. The expected target is 7,000 a day and LMRA said if the BIECC halls were full, people would be issued appointment cards for another day. "This will ensure that no one has to wait needlessly in the hot sun," the spokesperson said.

A total of 13,767 Indians, 6,709 Bangladeshis, 2,126 Pakistanis, 902 Filipinos, 343 Sri Lankans, 667 Nepalese and 1,147 people of other nationalities have registered till Sunday.

LMRA's acting public relations head, Waheed Al Balushi, said they received a satisfactory number of expatriates yesterday but it was less than that on Sunday.
