MUSCAT -- Bank Sohar has announced that it will lend support to Unicef Oman, in their child nutrition social communication campaign. The bank will support Unicef Oman by helping to create awareness of the campaign among the target audience. The Unicef campaign is a national campaign and will be conducted in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and will last for a year.

At a meeting held at the Ministry of Health, Deena al Asfoor, Director of the Department of Nutrition, Ministry of Health, and Farasha al Akbary, Operations Officer, Unicef Oman, briefed Munira Abdulnabi Macki, DGM Human Resources and Corporate Support Affairs, Bank Sohar, and Mazin Mahmood al Raisi, AGM Marketing and Publicity, about the long-term benefits of the social communication campaign that is to be launched on January 30.

Child nutrition, especially Protein Energy Malnutrition (PEM) is considered one of the important nutrition issues among infants and young children in Oman. PEM is manifested in children who are underweight for their age, who are stunted or who show low weight for height.

"We are aware that nutrition is an important indicator of health and welfare in a community," said Munira. "The programmes of nutrition in the country have succeeded in bringing about a marked decline in the rates of PEM during the last fifteen years. However, much remains to be done for achieving better nutrition standards in the population. The creation of awareness in the community about child nutrition and the role it plays in the health of infants and children is an important step in this direction."

"As part of our on-going corporate social responsibility programme, Bank Sohar has been studying different concerns within the community at the local, regional and national level. "Our study helps us prioritise and decide how best Bank Sohar may be involved in an effective manner in contributing to the solution of these concerns," said Al Raisi.

"Malnutrition impacts on children among vulnerable sections of the population and has long term manifestations. We are confident that our contribution to this Unicef-Ministry of Health initiative will result in creating awareness in the community and lead to improvement in the health and nutritional status of the entire community."

Munira and Al Raisi handed over Bank Sohar's contribution for the campaign to Deena from the Ministry of Health and Farasha from Unicef. "We are happy that Bank Sohar is extending a helping hand for the social communication campaign," said Deena.

"The involvement of Bank Sohar in creating awareness about the importance of child nutrition will go a long way in achieving the goals that the Ministry of Health and Unicef are working for in Oman."

"Bank Sohar's decision to contribute to the Child Nutrition Campaign is an exemplary step and demonstrates how corporates and government agencies can work together for the needs in the community," said Farasha.

Along with Bank Sohar, other corporates have also shown support by sponsoring the campaign.
