· Titanium Sponsor to Showcase Sustainable Solutions During Four Day Show

Dubai, United Arab Emirates - Leading power and water developer, ACWA Power is to showcase its key projects at this year’s Water, Energy, Technology and Environment Exhibition (WETEX 2016).

As Titanium sponsor for the region’s preeminent water and energy conference, ACWA Power will highlight the progress of its major developments, including the 200MW Shuaa Energy PV IPP project, currently under construction at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park.

Commenting ahead of his company’s participation at this year’s WETEX, Mr. Mohammed Abunayyan, chairman of ACWA Power, said: “WETEX is one of the most important strategic events in the region that focuses on the most significant elements that has the maximum impact on the creation of a sustainable future. We applaud the strong commitments made in the UAE to embrace new technologies which will secure the country’s energy and water future. We at ACWA Power, support the diversification of the energy mix, as it enhances much needed energy supply security on a cost competitive basis for this basic ingredient which is vital for not just economic development but for life itself.”

In the UAE, ACWA Power is developing the Shuaa Energy PV IPP – the second phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, which will produce 200MW of photovoltaic (PV) solar power. Once complete, the park will occupy 4.5 square kilometres and help avoid 400,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. This will contribute to the measures the country is already taking to realize the commitments in the Paris Agreement, adopted late last year by 195 states to limit global warming to 2°C below pre-industrial levels, which was ratified by UAE just this month.

The company is also currently developing the Hassyan Energy Phase 1 PSC in the UAE which will generate 2,400MW of net electricity contributing to the energy mix diversification strategy that the Emirate of Dubai has embarked on. This project utilises ultra-supercritical (USC) boiler technology that requires less coal per megawatt-hour but of a much higher quality of coal than conventional coal fired power stations, due to higher performance efficiency, and leads to lower greenhouse gas emissions in the process. These emissions from this plant are to be cleaned to an extra -stringent standard not adopted in any coal-fired power plant either in operation or construction in the world.

As a leading developer operating on a wide geographic foot print, ACWA Power is involved in many countries generating electricity using a range of technologies including several renewable energy technologies. One of the notable projects is the NOORo1 Concentrated Solar Power plant at Ouarzazate, Morocco, which was inaugurated earlier this year. The project is the first phase of what will be one of the world’s largest solar complexes when the other two phases under construction are completed. NOORo1 is now dispatching 160MW of renewable energy not only when the sun is shining but also for three hours into the night using heat collected from the sun and stored in salt for use at night.

Paddy Padmanathan, president and CEO of ACWA Power, said: “We pride ourselves at ACWA Power of reliably delivering power and water at the lowest possible cost. At this year’s WETEX exhibition we will be showcasing the very best of renewable and sustainable energy solutions. We are honoured to have a strong partnership with DEWA to develop and operate key projects which contributes to the Emirate achieving its ambition of securing an energy mix that is reliable, cost competitive and environmentally responsible.”

Later this year, ACWA Power will also play a leading role at COP22 in Marrakech, an annual conference that serves as the world’s foremost meeting to assess the progress nations have made to address climate change.

WETEX takes place from 4th-7th October, 2016 at Dubai World Trade Centre. ACWA Power will be located in Zabeel Hall, at stand SSP4.
