JEDDAH: The Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage (SCTNH) is helping private museum owners raise historical and cultural values of their projects by making them productive.

Dr. Faisal Al-Sharif, the SCTNH director general in Makkah, said this is to realize the objectives of "The Kingdom is Muslims' Destination" initiative that he said will go a long way to contribute to the overall national economy, as also to boost national workforce.

He said the element that distinguishes private museums is that they represent a real national asset which must be maintained and transferred to the coming generations, a local publication reported.
Al-Sharif was speaking at a coordinating meeting for the development of private museums and to list them within the tourism guide of Makkah.

The meeting was attended by owners of private museums in Makkah, the adviser to SCTNH in Makkah, Tariq Khan, and the director of archaeology in Makkah, Abdul Rahman Al-Thubaiti.

The meeting was held at the headquarters of the Makkah Museum in Al-Zaher neighborhood, and discussed a number of topics which reflect the interests of the SCTNH to preserve national heritage and entrench this industry, and ways to develop its work in alignment with Saudi Vision 2030.

The meeting discussed the other issues concerning the mechanism of work at the museum, including visiting times, listing the museum on the list of cultural tourism tracks, in addition to their promotion and marketing among tourist guides, visitors, residents and citizens of Makkah and pilgrims.

Al-Sharif said that there is joint action between the SCTNH and the owners of museums to develop plans to introduce modern techniques and add events that link them with historic and cultural programs, such as crafts, handicrafts, productive families, and cultural events to be held during the week and on weekends, in addition to holidays and occasions, in accordance with the interests of each museum and its cultural specialization, and in accordance with Islamic values and Shariah.

He added that SCTNH will also work to document and classify the collectibles in the museums under the supervision of a scientific and technical specialist in the national registry, in addition to highlighting individual efforts of their owners and their role in maintaining national heritage and documenting it for visitors and the future generations.

Sharif noted that these periodic meetings with owners of private museums will continue to upgrade the quality of work and in order that each museum has its own cultural and civilized characteristics to prevent duplication and replication of displays, and so that each of the individual museums targets a special segment of visitors.
