SQU Team set a new Arab Record at the competition

Muscat, Oman - Three teams of student from prominent Omani educational institutions: Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), Caledonian College of Engineering (CCE) and German University of Technology (GUtech) represented the Sultanate in the seventh edition of Shell Eco-marathon Asia 2016, the 4-day challenge held from 03 to 06 March in Manila, The Philippines. Mohammed Mahmood Al Balushi, Managing Director of Shell Oman Marketing Company, was also present at the event to encourage and support the Omani teams.

The SQU team put on an outstanding performance, coming in a commendable fifth place in the Prototype Gasoline category from a line-up of more than 100 teams - and setting a new Arab record of 281 kilometres per litre of gasoline using their gasoline-run prototype called 'SQU Eco-Wheels'. The team from GUTech, Team Megalodon, participated with a prototype diesel engine called 'Diesel Meister', and the Caledonian College team, named Sadarah, participated with a prototype electric engine called 'N'.

The Shell Eco-marathon provided the participants from Oman with a unique experience, with the teams showing great patriotic spirit, and collaborating with each other while preparing their prototypes to go through the technical inspection phase.

The competition also brought teams from different countries together, and in one of the more admirable gestures of goodwill and sportsmanship, the Omani team from CCE donated parts of their machine to help a competing team from India.

As part of Oman Air's Corporate Social Responsibility and strategy towards the academic sphere in the Sultanate, Oman Air sponsored the vehicles' transportation to and from Manila.

Mohammed Al Balushi, MD of Shell Oman, said, "I was pleased to see the team work and passion shown by the Omani teams as they worked together to achieve their goals. Introducing Shell Eco-marathon to the universities and colleges in Oman is in line with our corporate social responsibility commitment. Shell Oman aims to provide the new generation of Omani innovators and engineers the opportunity to learn, and turn their knowledge and vision on sustainable mobility into reality. We hope that the competition gives the students a platform to become part of the global dialogue about the future of fuel efficiency."

Tariq Al Subhi, leader of the SQU team said, "We were happy to see that our strategies have been successful, and we are proud to be one of the leading teams in this competition, as well as the team that broke the Arab record. Participating in the Eco-marathon has been a life-changing experience! The leadership, management, and design skills that I learned - thanks to Shell Eco-Marathon - cannot be taught in the classroom, and has influenced the way I think in my everyday life. I gained an invaluable experience, competing against the top engineering talents in Asia."

Commenting on this occasion, Dr. Ali Al Lawati, External Relation Manager at Shell Development Oman stated, "Youth development is a pillar in Shell's social investment programmes in Oman, and we were very pleased to see the three Omani teams from Sultan Qaboos University, Caledonian College of Engineering and German University of Technology participate again in Shell Eco-Marathon Asia. I was impressed by the level of detailed preparations and innovative thinking that the students have demonstrated in the design and assembly of their vehicles. We at Shell, are committed to supporting innovation and Omani youth development through initiatives like the Shell Eco-marathon and other youth programmes we implement in Oman."

About Shell Eco-marathon
Shell Eco-marathon promotes learning and showcases the talent of students who take back lessons and ideas to help create a more energy-efficient future. The teams can choose to build one of two types of vehicles: Prototype - futuristic and highly aerodynamic vehicles - or Urban Concept: highly economical and innovative vehicles that resemble today's cars. They must pass a set of technical and safety tests and are then allowed onto the track to see how far they can get on the least amount of fuel.
