GASCO Senior Vice President of Technical, Sultan Al Muhairi, urges greater process safety leadership during keynote speech on first day of Process Safety Management Summit, Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi - Process safety must play a more prominent role on industrial sites to avoid disasters, such as the recent explosion in Tianjin, China, according to Sultan Al Muhairi, Senior Vice President Technical, GASCO. Mr. Al Muhairi spoke during the opening session of the 7th Process Safety Management Summit in Abu Dhabi, which took place today.

Mr. Al Muhairi spoke about the need for greater process safety leadership to ensure that companies have the right balance between important and urgent activities.

"It is about making sure we do the right thing to prevent a major accident from taking place and, just as importantly, to prevent an incident from escalating. It is not an activity in itself, but the outcome of many things we do throughout an assets project and operate phases," said Al Muhairi.

Ahmed Saleh, Technical Services Department Head, GASCO at the Bu Hasa division, urged managers to challenge the status quo with new approaches to process safety. He provided an overview on process safety, charting through innovations such as a state-of-the-art alarm management system and the11  work processes at the company that are based on Shell's Gas GAME Process Safety 22 requirements.

Figuring out the root causes of incidents is critical to preventing such incidentsDr. Ali Al Zubaidi Managing Director, Integrated Management System Associates, advised the audience. Only by understanding what causes each large-scale incidents can the industry hope to mitigate them and their impacts, he said.

Echoing these sentiments, numerous speakers discussed past incidents and lessons learned, including Ahmed Saeed Al Zaabi, Integrity Assurance Section Head, GASCO,discussed proactive process safety measures. Ashraf Sameh, QA/HSE Manager at Renaissance Services SAOG, raised the costs of accidents through a case study from Oman, while Benoy Joseph, HSE Advisor (RM & LP) at the Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company spoke of his experience managing major accident hazard management for aging offshore assets.
