DUBAI, July 3 (Reuters) - Passenger traffic at Dubai International Airport (DXB), the world's top airport for international passenger numbers, rose by 1.9 percent to 6.85 million in May from a year earlier, operator Dubai Airports said on Monday.

About 36.97 million passengers used the airport from January to May, up 6.7 per cent from 34.6 million in the same period in 2016, it said.

South America was the fastest growing region in May, up 60 percent, followed by routes to Eastern Europe which posted a year-on-year growth of 15.5 percent, while Asia showed a growth of 9.7 percent.

Freight volumes at DXB rose 2.6 percent to 226,916 tonnes in May from a year earlier.

"Considering that we've had some record breaking months earlier in the year, including the rush of travellers during the summer holiday and Eid break last week, we are looking forward to robust growth in the first half," said Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports.
