Indian engineering conglomerate Larsen & Toubro announced on Wednesday that it is growing its portfolio of power and water projects in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region, which also includes its first large-scale renewable energy project.

The $21 billion company said in a press statement that its Power Transmission & Distribution (PT&D) business, part of the wider L&T Construction business, is currently implementing 73 substation projects in the Gulf, including an extra-high voltage substation of 400 kV and also 132kV cabling projects with a total length of more than 50 kilometres.

The statement said PT&D had implemented 283 substation projects in the region to date, adding that its clients include the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), Transco, SEWA, and AADC in the UAE, and SEC and Saudi Aramco in Saudi Arabia.

The statement said the company's renewable energy business bagged its first solar power project in the Gulf with a capacity of 300 megawatts. In India, the company has 2 gigawatts of renewable projects to its credit, including floating solar PV, 150 MWhr energy storage projects and 500 microgrids.

L&T's water business, the statement said, has successfully commissioned more than ten water infrastructure projects with a combined value of more than $1 billion in Qatar, Oman, and the UAE.

Last year, it commissioned a turn-key 375-million-liters-per-day sewage treatment plant in Jebel Ali, the largest in the region, for Dubai Municipality, and is currently operating and maintaining the plant.

The water business, according to the statement, has also executed projects with advanced treatment technologies like Ultra Filtration and UV disinfection. It plans to offer its expertise in green technologies like groundwater rejuvenation through deep well injection, bio-solid fertilisers, and energy-saving from by-products.

The statement also highlighted the company's participation in the ongoing digital edition of WETEX 2020 and Dubai Solar Show.

T Madhava Das, Whole-Time Director & Senior Executive Vice President (Utilities) said: "As one of the major players in the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) services space, L&T is proud to be associated with WETEX Dubai since 2016, which brings together important stakeholders from across the globe and provides a perfect platform to interact and exchange ideas.
